Today , I’m going to talk about my favorite scene from a period drama, which is BBC’s adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” in 1995. Probably some of Austin’s geeks can see why I have to post this on November 26th.
It is not the famous wet shirt scene where Collin Firth as Mr. Darcy electrified millions of women viewers. (Sorry for the fans! Though I admit I find it quite lovely the way he was embarrassed when he met Lizzy after bathing) But the dance scene at the Netherfield ball.
Austin set two important balls in “P&P" which shift the story. One is the local ball where Lizzy and Mr.Darcy meet each other for the first time and she decides to dislike him and the other is Netherfield ball where two main characters confront with each other in perfectly elegant setting of Regency ball.
In Austin’s time, dances were immensely important in social life as unmarried women and men were not allowed to talk unchaperoned. When couples are dancing, it was customary to dance 2dances in a row which provides them with almost 30 minutes to talk or if you like, court while they were proceeding one side of the floor to the other.
So you can see how eagerly balls were awaited, especially the grander like Netherfield ball was a once in a lifetime opportunity for girls hunting for husbands.
What I find fabulous about the dance scene in this drama is electricity between the two main characters.
As they are dancing there is almost an intellectual fight between them yet you can see that they are attracted to each other at the same time. They come together and part come together and part... Their relationship at that time is beautifully laid out in the graceful 8-step circle. There is a lot of stamping feet and some turns they make are like that of a matador. The music and the lines are so perfectly in match that it feels that no special effects are needed. It is just natural… I rarely find period dramas better than originals but scenes like these are few of happy moments when I feel that way.
Jennifer Ehle as Lizzy is in Greek style high-waisted dress and her hair is adorned with
naturalistic silk flower accessories and a string of pearls which was the fashion of the time.
Lizzy always wears a modest garnet cross at her throat during the course of the drama
which I feel reflects her inner passion as well as social rank.

深まる秋の夜長のお供に恋しくなるのがしっとりとした重厚感のある文芸ドラマ。
すでに放映中のダウントンアビーのファイナルシリーズもDVD化が待たれますが、
今日は個人的な殿堂入りのベストワンをご紹介したいと思います。
ジョージアンのジュエリーに通底する凜とした空気感と抑制された様式美に共通する、
鋭い観察眼と控えめながら英国らしいウィットを散りばめた筆さばきが魅力の同時代の
作家ジェーン・オースティンの作品群。
なかでも『高慢と偏見』は彼女自身が‘キラキラとして眩しい’と晩年に振りかえった
珠玉のラブストーリーです。
英国恋愛小説の金字塔と呼ばれる名作だけあり幾度も映像化されていますが、
お勧めは1995年にBBCで放映されたTVシリーズ。
放映当時は放送時間になると通りから人が居なくなった…と言われるほどの
空前の大ブームを巻き起こし、コリン・ファース演じるMr. ダーシーがペンバリーの
池に飛び込むシーン（文字通りの水も滴る良い男!?）は女性ファンの間で伝説となりました。
（余りの人気に映画 “ブリジットジョーンズの日記” の中でこのシーンのパロディが登場したほど）
名シーンは数有れど、私のお気に入りはネザーフィールドでの舞踏会でリジーが初めて
ダーシーとダンスをする場面です。
挑発的な言葉を繰り返すリジーに対し、あくまで平静を装おうとするダーシー。
優美な音楽の調べに織り込まれる二人の丁々発止のやりとりはまるでマタドールと闘牛のよう。
背景でメトロノームのように響くステップの足音が会話の緊張感を高めていく一方、
離れては出会い、離れては出会いを繰り返すダンスの動きは磁石のように反発し合いながらも
惹かれ合っていく二人の関係性を暗示しています。
ダンスの最中で重要なダイオローグが行われるという監督にとっては悪夢のように
難しい場面ですが、ここでは台詞回しと音楽、そして振り付けの３つのパズルの
ピースがぴたりとあるべき場所に嵌まり、完璧なハーモニーを奏でています。
当時流行していた古代ギリシャ風のハイウェストのドレスや自然主義を反映した
リジーの花冠を模したヘッドドレスも必見。リジーは劇中常にシンプルなガーネットの
クロスペンダントを身につけていますが、作者のオースティンも同様のデザインの
トパーズのクロスを所有していたそうです。
細部はよく見えませんが、おそらく17世紀半ばから19世紀初めのジョージア王朝時代に
流行した、フラットカットのガーネットを集めてクロスを象ったデザインと思われます。
映像に写し取られた水彩画のように美しい英国のカントリーサイドの四季の移ろいと
それに重ね合わせられた主人公のエリザベスとダーシーの恋模様。
6時間という贅沢な時間枠の中で原作の細かなディテールまでじっくりと丁寧に描かれており
『原作の世界観にできるだけ忠実に、かつ“文芸ドラマ＝詰め襟のシャツで堅苦しい会話”
というイメージを打破したかった』というプロデューサーのスー・バートウィスルの
意気込みが各所に詰まった玉手箱のようなドラマ。製作から20年の時を経ても
色褪せない普遍的な魅力はアンティークジュエリーにも通じるものが（？）
芳醇なジョージアンの王道ラブロマンス、
